The Rhone is one of the oldest rivers in Europe — flowing from the Swiss Alps through the heart of ancient Gaul to the Mediterranean. Centuries of sacred history run with its water.

After Rennes, Merona's path takes her east to the Rhone — the fourth point of the pentagram, the place where Water waits.

Merona stands at the river's edge as its surface begins to churn — responding to Armaeus, responding to her need, responding to something older than either of them.

The fifth point of the pentagram is not a destination. It is where Merona began.

Septimania — the Latin name for the region now called Languedoc — is Merona's home. In the elemental tradition, the fifth element is Spirit: the force that animates the other four. The center that holds the pentagram together.

Merona leaves Septimania with nothing but questions. She returns with the power of wind, earth, fire, and water — and carries all of them back to the place where Spirit has always lived.

Then she goes to Paris. To meet the king.
